Summer Youth Employment Program Experience

Akpezi O.

As an intern, our Monday Trainings consisted of financial education and future planning. I found this incredibly informative and important to learn at this age. As a teenager, if your parents don’t teach you responsible financial planning, you’ll make countless mistakes. I think learning about credit, savings, and budgeting was key, as many of the interns—myself included—are working for the first time. Almost every adult who spoke to us kept saying, “I wish someone would have told me this at your age”. It made me realize how much people collectively struggle with financial planning, and the importance of starting as young as you can. I particularly enjoyed our very last Monday training, where several guest speakers from various professions came to speak to us. It was thought-provoking to me how all of them took such drastically different paths, but they are all successful. It made me internalize that there’s no “right way” to do life. All that matters is that you work hard at what you’re doing, and you’ll succeed. Our table leaders and guest speakers were also all very friendly, encouraging us to ask questions.
